Pickle Castors with Cranberry Inserts

101_0171.jpg (114143 bytes)

(click picture to enlarge)

Description Here is a sexy little Pickle Castor for ya.  This is another one that may find it's way home with me.  The very detailed frame is made by the Toranto S.P. Company and sets of the Cranberry Opalescent Daisy & Fern insert very well.  The insert, lid and tongs are in great condition.   The frame is very nice but is missing the flower off the back side and has one of the daisys loose from the handle.  Myself, I think it is still a top notch castor, worthy of any collection.

Description Here is a very nice cranberry enameled pickle castor.  The frame is not signed so we are not sure who it was made by.   It is in all over good condition with some silver loss and a few small flea bites around the rim.  This is a very nice castor as you can see from the pictures.

Description: WOW, what a nice castor.  The frame is made by the Wilcox Silver Plate Co. in Meridian Conn..  It has a Cranberry glass insert by the Northwood Glass Co. in the pattern Pannelled Sprig.  The frame lid and tongs are in great shape with good silver.  The insert is also in great condition with only a few small flea bites to the lip.

Description Here is an absolutely gorgeous cranberry Victorian pickle castor by the Warren Silverplate company. with a bulbous cranberry inverted thumbprint insert.  It has been professionally resilvered and displays very nice.  The cranberry jar is in great condition and was most likely made by Northwood.  Normally I would list a castor of this design for about $850 +, however this castor has had the handle repaired prior to being resilvered.  The repair is at the base of the handle on both sides and is hard to see when the castor is together.  The handle has a slight movement to it although it is in no danger of coming off.  As you can see in the scan it displays very nicely.  The color is a true Victorian cranberry color and a little pinker than you see in the scan.  Due to the repair we are listing this castor $200 below the normal listing price.

Description  Cranberry thumbprint pickle castor/caster, Boston silverplate frame.  This castor is in very good condition as you can see.   The insert has a couple of small chips to the top inside edge of the lip (very minor and covered by the lid).  The frame, lid and tongs have been re-silverd at some time and are very nice.

Glass Companies and Silver Companies that produced pickle castors

Please note that this is just a list of the most common companies we have encountered and by no means a complete list. During the period that Pickle Castors were produced (1860 - 1910) there were hundreds of glass and silverplate companies in operation and many of them would have produced Pickle Castors for at least a short period. Also some of these companies went through several name changes during that time.  We only listed the most popular name they used during this period so you may encounter several variations of their names.

Silverplate Companies that made Frames, Lids & Tongs

Acme Silver Plate Co., - Adelphi silverplate Co., - American Silverplate Co., - Aurora Silver Plate MFG. Company, - Barbour Brothers, - Barbour Silver Company, - Benedict Silver Plate Co., - Boston silverplate Co., -  Bristol Plate Company, - Britannia Metal Co., - Brooklyn Silver Plate Co., - Derby Silver Co., - E.G. Webster & Son, - Empire Co. Silver Plate, - Forbes Silver Co., - Halleltons Co., - Hartford Silver Plate Co., - Homan Silver Plate Co., - James W. Tufts, - Meriden B. Company, Meriden Silver Plate Co., - Middletown Plate Co., -  Monarch Silver Co., - M.S. Benedict Mfg. Co., - National Silver Plate, - New Amsterdam Co., - New Haven S.P. Co., - Oriental Silver Company, - Pairpoint Mfg. Company, _ Philadelphia Plate company, - Queeny Silver Co., - Racine Silver Plate Co., - Reed & Barton S.P. Co., - Rockford Silver Co., - Roger and Bros., - Roger Smith and Co., - Royal Silver Plate Co., - Shelfield Plate Co., - Simpson Hall Miller C0., - Standard S.P. Co., - Toronto S.P. Co., - Vanberg S.P. Co., - Webster & Son, - Wheeton Co., - Wilcox Silver Plate Co., - William Rogers.

Glass Companies That made the glass inserts for the silverplate companies

A. H. Hiesey, - Beaumont Glass Company, - Boston & Sandwich Glass Company, - Bryce, Higbee and Company, - Buckeye Glass Company, - Burlington Glass works, - Campbell, Jones Glass Company, -  Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company, - Degenhart Glassworks, - Dugan Glass Co., Flint Glass Co., - Fostoria Glass Company, - George Duncan and Sons,  - Hobbs Brockunier Glass Company,- Imperial Glass Company, - Jeanette Glassworks, -  Jefferson Glass Company, - McKee Bros., -  Model Flint Glass Company, - Mount Washington Glass Company, - National Glass Company, New England Glass Company, - Northwood Glass Company, - O'Hara Glass Company,-  Pittsburg Glass Company,  - Richard and Hartley Glass Co., -  Riverside Glass Company, - U.S. Glass Company,

There were also some 3rd party companies (jobbers) that bought Pickle Castors from the silver plate companies and then Hand decorated them with Enamel Painted flowers, animals, birds or children before selling them to the stores.  This was mostly done to colored glass inserts and made for some very beautiful and highly sought after castors. Most castors seen with this decoration have Cranberry or blue glass inserts but they are also sometimes seen in Green, Amber and clear Glass. Its not a well known fact but the founding Brothers that started the Fenton Glass Company got their start as a glass decorating company.  It is speculated that they may have worked decorating glass at the Northwood factory and Hobbs Brockunier Factory for a short time before starting the Fenton Glass Company. With this in mind, those of you that collect Fenton pieces, it makes a person wonder, if that pickle castor in grandma's china cupboard with the nice Northwood decorated cranberry paneled sprig insert may just be,,,,maybe,,,,an example of Pre-Fenton, Fenton work....ofcourse thats just food for thought.
