Lacy Period Open Salts

 index.4.gif (143147 bytes)

The Lacy period in American glassware started around 1825 and went until about 1850. During this time early glass houses were just starting to use a new process of making glassware by pressing molten glass into molds with patterns carved into the molds.   As the glassware showed a lot of imperfections such as bubbles, straw marks, mold lines and cloudiness they made the patterns very fancy to attempt to cover up the imperfections in the glass.  These patterns usually had a lot of stippling (small dots) and designs that resembled the fancy lacy that adorned fine ladies dresses.   This is why the glassware was termed lacy glass.  The glass also had a very high lead content to it and was very brittle.  Many salts would show small chips and mold roughness right out of the molds.  This is why with Lacy period salts, salts small chips and mold roughness is still are considered to be in very good condition. Most salts from this time are very thick and heavy.  It was hard for the glass companies to keep the glass hot enough to press and many salts came out cloudy or with underfills.   Companies in the east such as the Boston & Sandwich or the New England glass companies used wood to heat their furnaces.  Western companies such as the Pittsburgh Glass company used coal and could get the molten glass much hotter so the salts they made were often much clearer with less imperfections.

At the bottom of this page you will find a list of books of interest to collectors of "OPEN SALTS", And a list of glass companies known to produce lacy glass.  Most or all may have produced Lacy Period Open Salts.

We have also placed a list of some of the open salts collectors clubs at the bottom of this page.

Lacy Period Salts are our personal favorites.

Lacy Period Salt Cellars

The lacy period salts listed in this section are listed in the order of their Neal identification numbers. Sorry that many of the pictures are not very clear, we need to invest in a better camera. The camera we are currently using works well for most items but does not take close ups so it is very hard to photograph these Early Lacy Salts and show the wonderful detail.

Description VERY RARE Salt Book!!!  This is considered the lacy salt collectors bible.  "Pressed Glass Salt Dishes of the Lacy Period" by L.W. & D.B. Neal.  Privately published by the authors in 1962.  This hard back book is 478 pages of the best information available on lacy salts.  There are 465 lacy salts drawn to scale with origin and rarity.  I paid $180 for my personal copy many years ago and have seen this book bring over $300 on e-bay.  The book is in Very Good condition, the dust jacket has some tears in it, as seen in the scan. Anyone wishing to collect Lacy Period Salts must have this book.

I paid $180 for my personal copy several years ago and have seen this book bring over $300 on e-bay.  Good condition, no dust jacket.
